How to get your Instagram messages into ChatGPT or Claude

Last reviewed:

Short answer

There are two ways. You can download your messages from Instagram (Accounts Center → Download your information, format JSON) and upload the files to ChatGPT or Claude. Or you connect your business inbox live through an MCP connector like DMowl, so the assistant always sees current conversations and can act on them.

Option 1: download your messages

  1. 1
    Request the download

In Instagram open Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information. Choose your account, pick only Messages and the format JSON.

  2. 2
    Wait for the file

Meta prepares the archive and notifies you, usually within minutes to hours. Download the ZIP.

  3. 3
    Upload the right files

Unzip it. Each conversation is a folder with message JSON files. Upload the ones you need to ChatGPT or Claude and ask your question.

Good for a one-off look back. The data is a snapshot, it can be large, and the assistant can only read, not reply. Menu names change from time to time.

Option 2: connect your inbox live

For a business or creator account, connect Instagram to DMowl and add DMowl as a connector in ChatGPT or Claude with the URL https://dmowl.com/mcp. The assistant then reads current conversations when you ask and can also act: tag contacts, build automations or draft replies.

Can ChatGPT read my Instagram DMs directly?

Not by itself. It needs either the files you upload or a connector that uses Instagram’s official API.

Does the live connector work with a personal account?

No. Instagram’s messaging API only works for professional accounts. Switching is free in the Instagram app.
