How to connect your Instagram account to DMowl

Last reviewed:

Short answer

You need an Instagram professional account (business or creator) with “Allow access to messages” switched on. In DMowl, click “Authenticate with Instagram”, log in with Instagram or Facebook, pick your business portfolio and the Instagram account, and keep all permissions on. A Facebook Page is not required.

Before you connect: check three settings

  1. 1
    Professional account

In the Instagram app go to ☰ → Settings and activity → Account type and tools → Switch to professional account. Business and creator both work. Personal accounts have no messaging API.

  2. 2
    Allow access to messages

In the Instagram app go to ☰ → Settings and activity → Messages and story replies → Message controls → Connected tools and switch on “Allow access to messages”. Without it, DMowl receives no DMs.

  3. 3
    Public account

Comment and mention triggers only work on a public account. Check ☰ → Settings and activity → Account privacy.

Connect in five steps

  1. 1
    Start in DMowl

During onboarding, or later under Settings → Instagram, click “Authenticate with Instagram” (or “Reconnect”).

  2. 2
    Log in with Meta

A Meta window opens. Log in with Instagram or with Facebook — both lead to the same result.

  3. 3
    Pick a business portfolio

Meta asks which business portfolio the connection belongs to. If you don’t have one yet, Meta lets you create one right there. It is free.

  4. 4
    Pick the Instagram account

Select the account DMowl should manage. If you run several, select only the one you are connecting now.

  5. 5
    Keep all permissions on

Leave every permission ticked and confirm. Meta sends you back to DMowl, which syncs your posts and switches on webhooks for DMs and comments.

You don’t need a Facebook Page. DMowl uses Meta’s current “Instagram API with Unified Login”, which works without one.

Log in with Facebook instead of Instagram

Logging in with Facebook is handy if your Instagram account already sits in a business portfolio, if you manage a client’s account as an agency, or if you don’t have the Instagram password at hand.

  1. 1
    Link the accounts

Your Instagram account must be linked to your Facebook account in Accounts Center (Instagram app: ☰ → Accounts Center → Accounts → Add accounts), or be part of a business portfolio where your Facebook account is an admin.

  2. 2
    Choose Facebook

In the Meta login window, pick “Continue with Facebook” and log in.

  3. 3
    Pick portfolio and account

Select the business portfolio and the Instagram account, keep all permissions on and confirm.

Account not listed? It is neither linked in Accounts Center nor in a portfolio you manage. Link it (step 1) or log in with Instagram instead.

Which case are you?

SituationWhat to do
Personal Instagram accountSwitch to a professional account first (see above), then connect.
No business portfolio yetCreate one in the Meta login window when asked. Nothing else to set up.
Your account is missing from the listIt belongs to a different business portfolio. Pick that portfolio, or add the account to yours at business.facebook.com → Settings → Accounts → Instagram accounts.
You manage a client’s account (agency)In DMowl, open the account switcher and create a new account for the client. Then either the client connects with their own login, or you connect with a login that has access to the client’s business portfolio.
Several Instagram accountsCreate one DMowl account per Instagram account in the account switcher, and connect each one separately.
“Wrong account connected”Meta authorised a different account than the handle you entered. Log out of Instagram in your browser, log in with the right account and connect again.
“Already connected”This Instagram account is linked to another DMowl account. Disconnect it there (Settings → Instagram → Disconnect), then connect it here.
“Permissions error” or cancelledA permission was unticked or the window was closed. Start again and keep all permissions on.

Connected, but nothing happens

  • DMs don’t show up in the inbox: switch on “Allow access to messages” (see above), then click “Reconnect” in Settings → Instagram.
  • Comments don’t trigger: make sure the account is public, the automation is switched on and the post is selected in its trigger (or “all posts”).
  • Your own test comments don’t trigger: DMowl ignores comments and DMs from the connected account itself. Test with a second account.
  • “Instagram disconnected” banner: Meta revoked or expired the access, for example after a password change. Click “Reconnect” — your automations, contacts and history stay.

Disconnect or revoke access

In DMowl, go to Settings → Instagram → Disconnect. Automations stop right away; contacts and history stay until you delete your DMowl account. You can also remove DMowl in your business portfolio settings at business.facebook.com — DMowl then loses access immediately.

Questions? Answers.

Do I need a Facebook Page to connect Instagram to DMowl?

No. DMowl uses Meta’s Instagram API with Unified Login, which needs a business portfolio but no Facebook Page.

Does DMowl see my Instagram password?

No. You log in on Meta’s own page, and DMowl only receives an access token for the permissions you approved. You can revoke it anytime.

Can I connect a personal Instagram account?

No. Instagram only offers its messaging API for professional accounts. Switching to a creator or business account is free and takes a minute.

Can I test DMowl before connecting?

Yes. Choose “Try it with demo data first” during onboarding: you get a sandbox with posts, contacts and a simulator for comments and DMs.
